When avoiding you are at the same time entering. Do not think about only avoiding, dodging or blocking. Think of attacking from angles to the opponents oblique or back. Thus, avoiding and attacking become the same. Kuzushi - Breaking Balance
4 levels of breaking balance - Ankles or Feet
- Knees
- Hips
- Shoulders or Head
To imbalance we use Kuzushi to create the state of Kyo (an opening or an entrance). Once we have an opening then we can manipulate our opponent for Nage Waza, arm bars, joint locks and striking.
Important Principles in Martial Arts
- For each action there is an equal & opposite reaction.
- The same force applied over a smaller area increases penetration.
- The lower the center of gravity the stronger the “stance”.
- Fluidity of motion increases speed.
- The greater the internal pressure, the more force/power available to be utilized. (Kiai)
- Mind like water reflects the moon.
- Uncomplicated motion increases endurance.
- The best defense is a well coordinated offense.
- Change of inertia is the difference between controlled & uncontrolled impact.
- Ki & Kime is the difference between controlled an uncontrolled power/force.
- A base pushes against the “feet” with the same force the feet push against the base (Ground Reaction Force).
- Position can mean defeat or failure.
- The willow always “snaps back”.
- Force/Power is greatest in the direction in which it is applied.
- Seven times down & eight times up.
- Composed mind eliminates trivialities.
- Karate is Kata.
